Mods: where to find them and troubleshoot saves

Where mods live, what to check before installing, and how to isolate a troublesome change.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Use the in-game mod.io browser, not Steam Workshop. Before changing a modded setup, keep an untouched save. If loading fails after a mod change, test on a copy and do not overwrite the original with dependencies missing.

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO · NOT PLAY-TESTED

A save stops loading after a mod change

The situation. Suppose a save loaded yesterday, then stopped loading after you changed one mod.

  1. Preserve the baseline

Keep the original save untouched and record the mod name, version and exact error.

  2. Compare the last working setup

Test a copy using the previously working setup, if available. Separately check whether a new unmodded game loads.

  3. Interpret cautiously

If only the changed setup fails, report that difference. It suggests where to investigate; it does not prove the mod is the only cause.

What would count as a useful result?

You should have a reproducible failing setup and a comparison that either works or fails in a different way. Do not overwrite the original during diagnosis.

Evidence to keep: Capture the error and mod list from your installation. No matching game-interface screenshot has been verified for this guide yet.

Use the intended mod destination

The official FAQ describes an integrated, cross-platform mod browser built with mod.io and explicitly says the game does not use Steam Workshop. It also allows manual sharing outside the browser. Do not assume that instructions written for the previous game apply unchanged.

When a save stops loading

The official known-issues page suggests testing with mods disabled for loading crashes. Perform diagnostic tests on a copy and avoid overwriting the original while dependencies are absent. This extra precaution is our recommendation, not a guarantee that a save can be recovered.

Do not assume PC saves transfer to console

At the time of our source review, the known-issues page listed PC save downloads on consoles as unsupported, with compatibility planned later. Check that page again before relying on a shared save: this is a dated limitation, not a prediction about future support.
